Impacting the Nervous System

Children with orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs) tend to also experience sensory issues because of OMD connections to the sympathetic nervous system.

Sensory Sensitivity in Children

Proper nasal breathing correctly activates the calming effect of the parasympathetic nervous system, the system responsible for “rest and digest” function. However, breathing improperly activates the sympathetic nervous system, more commonly known as your “fight or flight” response.

Why does my child always seem anxious?

Literally every breath they take with an open mouth activates the “fight or flight” response, making it difficult for your child to relax, stay calm, or focus.

The good news is that everything can change when you address the ineffective breathing patterns that lead to a dysregulated nervous system.
